Shoot Him
My friend is an artist and he wants me to photograph him. Any ideas on where or how to shoot?
he is in a band and a solo artist and a guitar player. I dont want the shots to look cheesy or cliche.
Shoot your friend in an environment that is accessible to him: either one that he lives in (home, practice space, work, etc.) or one that is true to the mood or lyrics of his music. Make sure the space has depth (not cramped) and is open (not cluttered). If you don't have enough room indoors, consider shooting outside.
Also, have him wear clothes that go with the colors in the place you are shooting. (Or do the opposite, and have him wear something that really stands out from the surroundings.)
Consider the light. Make sure it is bright enough that you can see his face, but not so bright that you don't have any shadows. Shadows are interesting and moody, and they give a 3-dimensional look to photographs.
Even if he is looking right into the camera, have him doing something. Take a lot of shots and allow him to get comfortable and try different things. Avoid the school picture-style pose: think live action.
