Sue Grafton A-Z books?
I haven't read any of them, but I was wondering, which book is best to start with? Do I need to start with A is for Alibi? I have read reviews and it seems like there are better books in the series.
A is for Alibi isn't necessarily the best book, but since the series is in chronological order and there is very little time between books it would be best to read them in order.

How I Survive Housecleaning
I detest housecleaning. There I admit it, and if it makes me a bad person, then so be it.
No doubt there are other's out there who find fulfillment in shiny windows and dirt free decks. My hat goes off to them. But personally, I'd so much rather be reading a book or hanging out at the pool with my kids.
I find washing dishes and mopping floors mind-numbing and tedious. I get no joy from making beds or causing stains to disappear from counter tops and clothing. And I'd rather listen to three hours of an elementary school band concert than scrub the greasy dust from my kitchen mini-blinds.
Still I'm honest enough to admit that cleaning is necessary. Especially at my house. My children would happily wear the same t-shirt for seven days in a row, day and night.
Of course, these are the same kids who would literally die of thirst in front of the water dispenser if they couldn't find a clean glass in the cupboard. Far be it for them to actually pull a dirty cup from the sink and wash it.
The option to quit housework is simply out of the question, and we can't afford a fulltime maid. So I've had to become creative and think outside the box. There must to be something that would distract my brain from the repetition of daily cleaning.
My first idea was music, upbeat dancing music to be exact. With a little boom box playing my own mix of disco and hip hop singles, I'm not ashamed to admit that I'd sashay through my chores.
The mop made an excellent dance partner as across the floor we'd glide my hips shaking seductively to the beat. (I've been told that other loose parts of my anatomy also shook in less flattering ways, but I simply don't believe that.)
Unfortunately, dancing and wet, soapy floor proved to be a tragic combination. Though the twisted ankle did get me out of housecleaning chores for a good week and a half, my husband insisted I find another distraction while I tidied the house.
I considered the use of a small portable television propped up in easy view. This way I could keep up on the latest news, follow all the talk shows and help Judge Judy keep peace in the domestic world while my hands industriously folded laundry or dusted the living room.
But my family has a history of television gaffes.
When I was young and my brother just a toddler, my mother used to watch TV while she cooked dinner. The program, (I don't know what it was, but I've always suspected a soap opera) was interrupted by the noisy yowling of the family cat who wanted to be let outside.
Without missing a beat or taking her eyes from the screen, mom scooped up the noisy animal, opened the sliding glass door, plopped it on the patio, shut the door and returned to the sink.
A few moments later she was again disturbed by the sound of the cat meowing and curling up around her ankles. Mom stared at the animal in confusion. Hadn't she just put her outside? But if Fluffy was here…
She turned to the back door where my little brother, his chubby hands pressed against the glass stood peering in at her with a look of confusion.
No, a television was out of the question.
Then the answer came. It was perfectly simple, physically safe and not visually distracting.
Now as I clean the fridge or make the beds, I'm listening to Dean Kootz's Odd Thomas or Sue Grafton's T is for Trespassing on my mp3 player. I can keep the little devise in my pocket and the earphones allow me to enjoy my stories without interruption.
While vacuuming the stairs Miss Marple and I solve crimes, and if I'm feeling really intelligent, I will search for clues with Mr. Sherlock Holmes while I scrub out the toilet bowl. There is no chore so icky that a little murder and mayhem won't brighten it up.
Audio books have been my savior. I get so lost in the plot that I've been known to work for hours on end. I hate to admit it, but sometimes I actually find things to clean.
The only downside is that I've had to give up talking to my husband and children. I mean you can't follow a complicated plot, sweep the kitchen floor and answer questions about what's for dinner all at the same time can you?
